Dave Foote, Chris West and Bill Willets…

…make a Windsor stool.

One of Dave Foote’s legacies, from his 2007/8 chairmanship, will be a return to more hands-on turning in the club. The Romsey local group (Dave Foote, Chris West and Bill Willets), which Dave has formed from members in his locality, treated the rest of the membership to a demonstration of how to make a Windsor stool.

Dave made the seat and one leg with Chris and Bill turning a leg a piece. Keeping with tradition, the seat was of elm and the legs were of ash.

Dave drilled the holes for the legs with a sawtooth bit. He had a cunning angled sled which ran between the lathe bed-bars and was pushed forward by the tailstock quill.

Chris West made the first leg to a pattern drawn by Bill. Bill then made a second leg. Although it has to be said that Bill’s leg bore more resemblance to his pattern than to Chris’s leg. Finally Dave’s leg looked nothing like the pattern or the other two legs ;-)

However, all three legs were the right length and looked sufficiently alike for the differences to disappear when the stool was assembled, as I’m sure you’ll agree.

All in all, it was a fun evening with lots of joshing and the shavings flew…
